18/10/24Our Services Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical treatment which works by delivering impulses of energy, targeted to specific damaged tissues within the abnormal tendon or section of the body.

It is a treatment which can be very successful second line treatment for patients who fail to respond to appropriate physiotherapy or other conservative treatments.

Common conditions treated with Shockwave Therapy include:

How can Shockwave Therapy help?

Shockwave Therapy delivers impulses of energy, targeted to specific damaged tissues within the abnormal tendon. This increases the blood flow within the affected area, stimulating cell regeneration and healing, and decreasing local factors which can cause pain.

If you are currently being treated by one of our practitioners, they may have recommended this treatment, or you can discuss with them at your next visit if shockwave therapy could be a useful part of your treatment plan.

Alternatively, you can book an appointment for shockwave and the session will start with an assessment by one of our practitioners to ensure that this is the right treatment for you. They will work with you to identify the exact area of pain and provide their diagnosis and treatment plan. At that session you would then have your first treatment session.

What happens during shockwave treatment?

A gel-like substance is applied to the exact area to promote the process and a probe is pressed on to the affected area and the shockwaves are delivered through the skin. The impulses are delivered through the skin as a shockwave that spreads inside the injured tissue as an aspherical ‘radial' wave. These radial shockwaves initiate an inflammation-like response in the injured tissue that is being treated. It prompts the body to respond naturally by increasing blood circulation, the number of blood vessels and therefore metabolism in the injured tissue.

The shockwaves are felt as pulses which are a little uncomfortable but not painful. Typically, your first treatment will start with a low level of intensity and increase this to a point where you feel comfortable, the procedure does not require any type of sedation or anaesthetic.

How will I feel after a shockwave treatment session?

Patients may notice a swelling or reddening of the area and a brief increase in pain. Many patients experience an improvement in symptoms almost immediately while others take several weeks to respond. Your practitioner will review your progress regularly and decide how may treatments you need.

As we provide personalised care, it is not possible to say at the outset exactly how many treatments you need, but most conditions require a minimum of three sessions before a discission on its effectiveness can be made. These treatments may be performed weekly or further apart.
