Stay Active This Autumn: Simple Ways to Keep Moving and Feeling Your Best

17/09/26Stay Active This Autumn: Simple Ways to Keep Moving and Feeling Your Best

Autumn is here. The days are getting shorter, the temperature is starting to drop and the temptation to swap an evening walk for the sofa is becoming a little harder to resist!

While slowing down and enjoying a cosy evening is one of the pleasures of autumn, staying active throughout the colder months is important for keeping your body moving well and supporting your overall health and wellbeing.

The good news is that staying active doesn't have to mean joining a gym, running miles or starting an intense new exercise programme. Small amounts of regular movement can make a real difference.

Here are some simple ways to keep moving this autumn.

Make the Most of Autumn Walks

Autumn can be one of the best times of year to get outside. Cooler temperatures, changing leaves and crisp mornings make it a great time for walking.

You don't have to go far. A walk around your local area, taking the dog out, walking to the shops or spending half an hour exploring a local park all count.

If you haven't been particularly active recently, start with a distance that feels comfortable and gradually build from there. Regular shorter walks can often be more achievable than trying to fit in one long walk at the weekend.

Keep Moving During the Day

It's easy to think that being active means setting aside time specifically for exercise, but everyday movement matters too.

If you spend a lot of time sitting at a desk, driving or watching television, try to break up long periods of sitting. Stand up, have a stretch, walk around the office or house, make a drink or take a quick walk outside.

Even a few minutes of movement regularly throughout the day can help stop you feeling stiff and sluggish.

Have a Plan for Rainy Days

We live in the UK – so unfortunately a little rain is inevitable!

Having a few indoor options means bad weather doesn't have to stop you moving. Try some gentle stretching or mobility exercises at home, walk up and down the stairs a few times, put some music on and move around, or try an online yoga, Pilates or exercise session.

It doesn't need to be complicated. The important thing is to keep moving.

Don't Forget About Strength

As we get older, maintaining our strength becomes increasingly important for helping us continue doing the everyday things we enjoy.

Simple exercises such as standing up and sitting down from a chair, gentle squats, climbing stairs or appropriately chosen resistance exercises can all help.

If you're unsure where to start, particularly if you've had an injury or have an existing problem, speak to a healthcare professional who can help you choose exercises that are appropriate for you.

Remember – Everyday Activities Count

Exercise doesn't always look like exercise!

Gardening, clearing autumn leaves, cleaning the house, playing with the children or grandchildren, walking the dog and doing jobs around the home all involve movement.

Rather than worrying about whether you've completed a formal "workout", think about how much movement you're including throughout your day.

Warm Up as the Weather Gets Colder

When the temperature drops, give your body a little time to get moving before jumping straight into more strenuous activity.

Start gently and gradually increase your pace. This is particularly useful before activities such as running, cycling, gardening or playing sport.

And don't forget sensible footwear as paths become wetter and fallen leaves make surfaces more slippery.

Choose Something You Actually Enjoy

One of the best forms of exercise is simply the one you'll keep doing.

Walking, swimming, cycling, dancing, yoga, Pilates, gardening, playing sport or going to the gym can all help you stay active. There isn't one activity that's right for everybody.

Finding something you enjoy makes it much easier to make movement part of your routine – not just during autumn, but throughout the year.

Listen to Your Body

A little stiffness after doing something new can be normal, but don't feel you have to push through significant pain.

If something doesn't feel right, reduce the intensity or take a break. If pain persists, keeps returning or is stopping you doing the activities you enjoy, it may be worth getting some advice.

Sometimes getting the right guidance early can help prevent a small problem from becoming something that starts interfering with everyday life.
